Bill,
last night I finally pulled the rear seat to take a look.
I have the 8L0 862 257B for the pump on the RH side, yet I also have a 
small white box 4A0-951-173 that sez "Alarm" on it on the LH side.

My '97 S6 accepts the programming of my wife's '98 A4 switchblade keys 
and vice versa. The range sufferes quite a bit however.
