[s-cars] New to the list

I'm new to this list, so if my questions/comments seem too rudimentary
feel free to tell me to get lost.
 
I'm interested in buying a mid 90's S4 or S6. 
 
My questions:
 
1. Is it reasonable to use one as a daily driver, or would that be
considered blasphemous?  My commute is 45 miles one way 3or 4 times a
week.
 
2. Are they considered cars for those who enjoy working on cars?
 
3. Why would anyone choose a V6 over the inline 5 20v?
 
Off topic question:
 
I live 2.5 hours from Tahoe.  Does it make sense to throw on a set of
studded tires at the house before going up, or wait to get to the snow
to put on chains?  I hate the idea of putting chains on an S car (I've
been in quattros and had cops force us to put chains on in bad
conditions).
