No offence to Huw but that is a pretty silly statement.

"I've always heard that things should be lubricated with what they seal"

Examples,
I am a plumber so I always use *&#@ on toilet gasket seals, if I am out,
a bit of %^&* works well to.

So, it is often the case that o-rings are use to seal things that
actually swell them, solvents do a good job of swelling o-rings, like
gasoline. Silicon, petroleum o-ring lubricants made for high temp would
be my first choice, engine oil second. A flammable liquid that you
really shouldn't be touching and that swells the o-ring would be my
last, just after putting them in without anything on them.

Dow Corning and Parker both have good lubes for o-rings, one of my
favorites is DOW CORNING(r) 111 VALVE LUBRICANT & SEALANT. Good for
those cam cover seals also.

I've always heard that things should be lubricated with what they seal.
In this case, a touch of gasoline, although I would settle for engine
oil if I was nervous about that.

No, I wouldn't care to stick my neck out on this one!
