i just did this job recently, to replace the CV joint boot.

it's not that hard, once you figure out what to do.  it's a messy job,
though, so cover the floor with newspaper and keep a bunch of paper towels
handy.

i didn't need to put the axle in the vise, but i ran into some trouble
when i discovered that the old center bolt wasn't quite long enough to
pop the CV joint off.  after unsuccessfully trying to pull it off the
rest of the way by hand, i grabbed a hammer.  after a few whacks, the
CV joint came off.
