[s-cars] Losing hydraulic oil from power steering pump

Just a mention about the o-ring, as everybody seems to have forgotten
you're 300 miles away from the nearest Audi dealer. A regular O-ring
should last the 300 miles. So, for an emergency repair, find the socket
- I removed the cross plug with a socket and a ratchet so the impact
driver may not be required -, two or three O-rings - just in case - and
2 liters of Pentosin mineral hydraulic fluid - I think NAPA have it - in
case one o-ring blow off. And, during the repair, smell the hydraulic
fluid so you'll recognize the odour if an o-ring blow off when you
drive. An o-ring blowing off when you drive is not so bad. The brake
light will be on much before you start loosing power brake. And
replacing an O-ring will take 5 minutes on the side of any road, BTDT.
On my S6, the O-ring lasted 1200 miles. And this time, I can tell how I
know. On my 90Q20V, the PS-Pump have used a regular O-ring for
65000miles and counting as I regularly forget to buy another plug and
o-ring kit for the 90Q20V when I go to my preferred Audi part store. So,
when the S6 PS-pump started to leaks, I just used my little experience
and an o-ring I had in my toolbox. Obviously, once again, I forgot to
replace it with the real thing. Pouf this time!

Barbed fitting on wastegate is not supposed to have anything connected
to
it. It is just a vent. Leave it be. The X plug can be removed with a
large
1/2" drive straight blade screwdriver available from Sears and others
including NAPA. The tool I bought is from NAPA and the part # NS91 is
stamped on it. I put it to the grinder to knock off the corners for a
perfect fit. An impact wrench with you pushing with sufficient pressure
works well for removal of the plug. The o-ring on the plug is especially
hard and common o-rings will not hold the pressure. I have 6 on order
currently but none "in stock". I have misplaced the part# for the
o-ring. I
was guessing anyway. We shall see if I guessed correctly when I receive
whatever I ordered. The part # for a plug with o-ring is 026 145 541.
You
can order this from Crescent City Motors 800.966.7222 ask for the parts
department they will send it to you.
Best,
Tim Leonard

Subject: [s-cars] Losing hydraulic oil from power steering pump

> Hello,

> I have a slow leak of hydraulic oil from the power steering / brake
boost
pump on my '95 S6. At first, I thought it was the fitting at the top of
the
pump (see photo:
http://volcano.photobucket.com/albums/v11/tachyon/Audi/Dscn2273.jpg). I
have tightened that fitting as much as I dare and the leak persists.
There
is a plug in the top of the pump with a recessed cross (see the photo
again)
that I assume works with a special tool for installation and removal. I
tried tightening this plug by grinding a cold chisel to fit one leg of
the
cross "+" and was not able to budge it. I'm about 300 miles from the
nearest Audi dealer. I would like to find a way to stop this leak
without
making the drive.

device
that I presume to be a valve body that sits on top of the turbo (the
waste
gate valve perhaps, here's another photo...
http://volcano.photobucket.com/albums/v11/tachyon/Audi/Dscn2275.jpg).
There
is an open barbed fitting on the back side of this device that I assume
should have a hose connected to it. The car runs smooth and strong and
as
far as I know this barbed fitting has been without a connected hose
since I
bought the car several years ago. Is this anything to be concerned
about?
