[s-cars] Start problem! Seems to be fuel related - Advise needed...

Happy Xmas eve!

This morning the wife's S4 died on her.
The symptoms are...at first she couldn't accelerate beyond 3,000 rpm,
then it sputtered died and wouldn't restart. When she tried to restart
it it sounded like it was trying to start but didn't.

Because her gas gauge is not working correctly right now I tried
putting a  couple gallons of gas in the tank, it wouldn't start.
We then went to push the car out of the way (it was blocking another
parking spot). Because it was just lonely me trying to push this pig up
hill I wasn't able to get it all the way into the spot.

Being the genuis that I am I decided to use the starter to move the car
into the spot. This worked fine, the strange thing is then after
getting it into the spot the car started, but if I tried to rev it up
it sputtered.

Thoughts? possible bad fuel filter, clogged inlet on the fuel pump, or
are we looking at a bad fuel pump? I have already purchased a fuel pump
in anticipation that I will have to replace it. Is there a FAQ write up
on this job?
