Hi Rich,

it could be the "belt tensioner pulley bearing" or in not so technical 
language, the bearing for the belt tensioner. mine has very similar 
characteristics as your described and after many wise insights from the 
list, was advised to pull a lot off and re-pack w/ grease, or live with 
it. i have been happily living with it for the last 5,000 miles. see if 
that helps.
