I am hitting the list to see if there is any interest in a lightweight
flywheel conversion for those needing or anticipating a clutch replacement.
I have found from a Luk (OEM supplier of dual mass flywheel) tech the need
to replace the dual mass flywheel whenever a clutch is replaced. I believe
he may have been overstating this although I have found in the three I have
done that in each case the dual mass flywheel had excessive "twist" play. A
new dual mass flywheel is generally only available from the dealer at a
price of approximately $850. A clutch/pressure plate kit available through
aftermarket sources is approximately $325.
I have come up with a single mass lighter weight aluminum flywheel with
sprung hub clutch disc (vs. stock solid hub), pressure plate, throwout
bearing, pilot bearing and alignment tool for $1050. These components have
been designed to work together as a set to eliminate any problems with
fitment and driveline/transmission "rattle/stress" typical of a single mass
lightweight flywheel conversion. This setup will fit '92 - '97 S-cars. I
have found others who have made a lightweight flywheel, but none, as a set,
at this price point.
My goal was to gain better performance, longevity and streetability at the
same time doing so at a lower cost than a stock dual mass flywheel/clutch
replacement. There are higher performance options available for the clutch
disc material at higher cost if one so desires.
The catch is I must have 10 units made to get this setup. I need 2. I have 8
more to offer others in need. I feel this makes a viable alternative to the
dual mass flywheel, offering lower cost and a balance between street and
track performance as well as eliminating flywheel degradation until
replacement at the next clutch replacement. These sets would be available
March 1st.
