[s-cars] RE: no start... starter failure

Paul,

I had the wire disintegrate on my 200, and the rebuild guys told me the
starter was not worth rebuilding. However, it was not the same vendor as
the S starter. (On the 200, I installed a VW Quantum starter - problem
solved.)

On my S4, I had the same oil-induced meltdown that Mark had, but mine was
gradual; the car started hard, like the battery was dying, for about a week
before it quit. Rebuild was not cheap. I think if I had to do it again, I
would look for another used starter. I think almost anything from a
standard trans VW/Audi will fit.

I had similar experience.
Went to beer store car started fine for the trip there, no signs.
Went from beer store to gas station, car started fine no signs.
Filled up with gas. No start ever again.
Push started all weekend, and replaced the starter Monday.

It seems these go with little or no warning. I did however have a nasty
little oil leak, which may have lead to the replacement.

Hmmmm... Mark-

Was the starter failure due to the corrosion of the large braided wire that
goes into it from below? Noticed mine looking a bit flaky whilst under
there recently... tho maybe that was me looking into the mirror. Is this a
reparable item? Best to preemptively strike or wait, gents? I have visions
of preemptive attempt only resulting in costing more $$$ than waiting for
the inevitable... such is life.
