I agree....the HVAC was a great system to use! Plus without having a new one
to install at the time, you're doing twice as much work to take it out and
diagnose it, reinstall it, and them replace it later.
Although it's always good to be able to do it yourself.
My car runs at 70c or less on the road....so ordered a new t-stat.

Hi Marc,
I have only one problem with your method: Why would you spend 1h under
the hood, fighting with all the pieces which obstruct the T-Stat access
when you can diagnose your T-Stat without touching a rachet or a bolt,
without making a coolant mess in your garage or parking lot, just
seating warm and fuzzy in your recaro leather seat. HVAC rules!
Vincent.

Now this might seem overkill in this day and age, but I am always
surprised at how many people on the S-List ask for predictions and
diagnostics for things they can test themselves at home readily enough
using stone age technology (OK, pre-OBDC technology). This isn't to
chide anyone for asking, though, especially for some of the more
detailed info (thanks to everyone -- err, to no one -- who answered my
question about where the cable went from the brake distribution unit
that was hanging free in my car).
Thermostat questionable? Remove it, bring it inside, heat up one pot
of water on the stove (just shy of boiling), take another pot and put
ice-water in it. Place the thermostat in the cold one and wait 120
seconds -- does it close all the way? Place the thermostat in the warm
one and wait 90 seconds -- does it open all the way? If either of this
conditions isn't met, then it's bad -- period.
Best Wishes,
=-= Marc Glasgow
