[s-cars] Coil Pack Failures

Only after you smoke two POS's will you decide to test your coils.  NOTE TO
SELF:  test coils first.

Coils are made by BERU, whether you buy from dealer or someone who buys from
worldpac or IMP.  Obviously, the 7 digit Audi numbering costs $100 for the
non-soybean ink used to label the underside of the dealer coils.

You get a new $40 "ignition wire end plug" (e.g., spark plug boot), with a
new coil.  This is great, because it is only then that you decide you really
need to source the remaining 4 plug boots elsewhere (for about $20 per), and
nobody will have them.

So does that mean if we buy new coils they are made by Bremi?

Not sure who is making our coils when you buy them either from the dealer or
a parts supplier, are they all coming from the same place?

Ron: Dave here (in town).  There have been some problems with both the UrS
coils (under the "20V Turbo" cover) and the power output stage (POS) under
the black cover on the firewall.  However, I think they are pretty sporadic
compared to what is happening with the neu A4's and VW 1.8 T's.  Whoever VAG
had for a supplier before, they should go back because the current supplier,
Bremi (sp?), seems to be having quality control problems, i.e. failures
outside of the normal distribution that is expected.  I wouldn't worry.
