[s-cars] A different type of sunroof problem

I have already removed and cleaned the sunroof rotary switch, which
seems to be the favorite cause for most sunroof ailments. It did not
remedy my nonfunctional sunroof. Here's the symptoms:

I left my 95.5 S6 unattended for about a week. Apparently the battery
had run down (no previous history of draining). My sunroof suddenly
opened when I jumped the car. When I moved the rotary switch to close
it, it closed part way, then returned to the fully open position. I
repeated this several times, with the same results. Finally, the roof
stopped moving at all. However, I can hear the motor operating
occasionally as I reposition the rotary switch.

I removed and cleaned the sunroof rotary switch, and reinstalled. The
symptoms are the same. The roof will not move, and I can hear the motor
attempting to operate the roof.

I can't see how the motor links to the roof, but I'm guessing that
linkage must be the likely culprit. Any suggestions on how to verify,
or repair this assumption would be very helpful.

OR, any other ideas?

Thanks very much,

Robert Welch
