FWIW, IMO the stock unit from Audi, mit plastic or aluminum caps, was/is
pretty damn good.
As long as you consider yourself bound to the stock location I personally
doubt you can improve what the factory gave you when you bought the car.
OTOH, if you want to try, once upon a TAP offered a "sport" version of
unknown, & in my view now, perhaps somewhat suspect provenance at least
vis-à-vis the core material used, and maybe in regards to other matters as
well. Maybe the TAP sport IC is still available?
About all that I know for fact about the TAP unit is it is, in fact, @ 1"
larger (i.e. longer) than the stock @ 4" x 9" x 11" unit. Everyone will
have different opinions, but I don't know I'd agree with what sounds like
dissatisfaction on your part with the plastic end tanks. I'm not sure I
would lump the tanks in with the knocks against the X-over pipe. The
plastic tanks are actually very well constructed from what I can tell, and I
would guess equally as durable as the earlier full metal ones. The only
advantage might be some additional machineability, and perhaps more
conventional "weldability" of the aluminum tanks.

On Behalf Of Chad Hall
I have an appointment Friday a.m. with my mechanic to help diagnose my major
boost leak. We think that I may have ruptured either the plastic x-over
pipe to the intercooler or maybe the end caps of the I/C itself--will
pressure test tomorrow. My question is using the stock location, does
anyone have any experience with replacing the stock I/C with something more
efficient? Regardless of efficiency, I won't replace a bad plastic-capped
I/C with a similar unit. Do I just check with Blau and tell them I have a
'92 instead of my '95 to get the beefier unit? Any aftermarket ideas like
Spearco maybe?
Thanks,
Chad Hall
