In regard to shipping this thing, I have an option for you. By they
way, FedEx WILL take it, but you have to talk to their Freight division,
just ask for them when you call 1800-GoFedEX. Freight handles all
palletized cargo over 150 lbs. or if it is less than that but still
palletized, will charge you fro 150lbs minimum. I tried to ship UPS
freight a few years back and even though they had the commercial that
showed them shipping that friggin' whale Keiko around the world, they
wouldn't take my 400 lb skid of printed product. Go figure....
ANYway, I have a good deal of experience with shipping stuff around the
country as part of my job and the best people I've found are CH Robinson
Freight. The local number I call is 925-467-5910 (ask for Daniel).
Tell him where you are and if he has a local number for you to call.
They are a freight broker, i.e. they don't own any trucks but have
contracts with most of the major lines and many independents, thus being
able to pick and choose the best rate (i.e. which shipper is the most
desperate for business).
They are significantly less expensive than most of the other options
I've looked into and have been very responsive and easy to deal with.
Good luck,
Jim K.

Subject: RE: [s-cars] Transmission for sale

Bob,

I was the one who asked the list about the transmission, a lister
responded
that they knew of a mechanic in DC that had one for sale. I called the
mechanic about it and here is some info:

95 S6 transmission 5 spd, the mileage is somewhere between 68k and 78K (
I
spoke with both the mechanic and the original owner and they both could
not
remember for sure). The previous owner thought the transmission had
a
bad torsen differential evidenced by a squeak or chirp 3-4 time while
starting of under heavy load. The mechanic thought it was just a bad
clutch, but the PO bought a 6 speed and had the clutch and trans
replaced at
the same time. The problem went away when both were replaced, so who
know
what the problem was for sure. The asking price was $900 plus shipping.

These transmissions are more than 150 lbs, so ups or fedex will not
handle
them. Between the uncertainty of the torsen and the hassle of shipping
by
freight, I have not decided if I want to take a chance on this one.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to ship this thing and if the torsen
could
really be a problem?

Jack
