Tom;

You can't fit the 9005 bulb in the Euros - it won't mount in the H1 base. If
you want more light output, the H1 bulbs are available in 85w, 100w, & 135w.
If you use the higher wattages, make sure you relay the bulbs - the OEM
headlight and dimmer switches will burn out at the higher power loads. Using
higher wattage bulbs in the low beams can result in damage to the reflector
coating from the increased heat, but higher wattage in the high beams is OK.
All bulbs are not created equal, and bulb and filament geometry has an
effect on efficiency. I recall reading somewhere that the H1 bulb is more
efficient than the 900x series bulbs.

List Wisdom Sought:

wow, nice link (alvin)!

so here's my question: If I am currently running euro's, which IIRC come
stock with an H1 for the highbeamand 55w low (?) am I better off leaving it
alone?

Or would a switch to the 9005 in either the highs or lows help?

Tom,

I'd like to take credit for this conversion but all I did was find the
website - http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/More_light.htm. There are
excellent pics and instructions there.

The only things of note was that I didn't bother with getting any
blue/xenon/plasma/etc bulbs, a standard 9005 from GE/Wagner/Osram will do
fine.

A word of caution - be careful when you put the modified 9005. By cutting
down one of the outer locking tabs you can easily over-rotate the bulb on
installation, slightly mis-aligning your bulb and making removal impossible
without a jewelers screwdriver. After a year of use my 9005's haven't moved
(because of the cut down locking tab) and the low-beam reflector hasn't gone
crispy either.
