[s-cars] Time for new tunes

Most aftermarket head units won't support the dual (diversity) antennas, but
you should be able to hook up just one and leave the other unused. It looks
like you would want to hook up the rear window antenna since it receives AM
& FM whereas the front windsheild antenna receives only FM (per Bently Vol
III W91-28.)
Note that both antennas are amplified, so you need to make sure to supply
switched power on connector III pin 5 for the antenna(s) to work. You
should be able to use the blue switched lead on most aftermaket receivers
for this purpose.
Keep in mind that the Bose system was designed to work a whole, and
replacing just part of it could be troublesome. The other big issue is
going to be the speaker connections which feed the Bose amplifiers (one in
each front door, one in the trunk.) It appears these are a low level
speaker connections using a common ground. Many aftermarket receivers,
including any that are considered "high power", have a separate + and - for
each speaker and will fry if you just hook - wires are hooked together.
Also, Bose speakers require a "funny" equalization. Don't know if this is
done in the head unit or in the individual amplifiers.
Hopefuly someone who has BTDT can shed some more useful light on the
subject.
You might also talk with the folks at Crutchfield about what you want to
do... they seem knowledgeable about integrating with factory systems in
popular models like Ford Explorers. Don't know how much they know about our
niche cars.

Hi all - I've been looking for a couple weeks at new head units to put in my
93 S4 and now I'm all confused. So, why not ask the group...
I want to replace the factory Bose head unit and had planned to leave the
factory amps and speakers intact (for now). MP3 is a must (WMA would be
nifty) and there are several options from Alpine and Kenwood that I have
been looking at. Has anyone BTDT? Any preferred or recommended models that
tie in with the existing Bose stuff nicely? What about the dual antenna
setup - just an adapter?? I don't really have any interest in going down
the iPod route and I'm ok with losing the factory changer (who needs it with
mp3's anyway). Any recommended dealers or online stores? I've been looking
at Crutchfield, Car Toys and Soundtrack so far.
Thanks!
Scott Austin
