Bob: When I first got my 93 S4 in 1998, I thought "what good
engineering:  when I open the drivers door with the radio on, the
speaker automatically cuts out so as to not annoy the neighbours".
While this could actually be a design feature, I eventually (2 or 3
days) figured it out:  there was a wire broken inside the rubber boot
between the door and the main car body.  I took the speaker out to check
the wire colour code and then gently pulled the boot away from the door
and then the body until I could see where the wire was broken (the
covering was slightly cracker from fatigue). I used a crimp-on butt-end
connector to "fix" break.  No problems since - (except now I can annoy
the neighbours leaving the door open with the radio on.)
