I always have put 15" steel wheels on my quattros with
nice quality cheapo hubcaps from Tirerack. I have
Nokian Hakka 1's mounted on them by a local tire
dealer since tirerack does not sell Hakka's. Tirerack
will drop ship to your tire dealer though.
I have 195/65 R15 on my S6 avant. Tall and Skinny is
your objective with snow, or mud, tires. Look what the
WRC cars drive.
I drove in a blizzard Saturday morning to go skiing. I
spent my whole trip in the passing lane, which had a
section unplowed for 30 miles. Those darned SUV's were
always in my way though!

For real winter driving (ice and/or sleet and/or snow)
you're better
off
with steel wheels for the inevitable meeting with
concrete curbs and
the
like.

Check your local dealership and Euro-service shops to
see if they have
anything in the storage room they'd like to clear out.
On-line you
could try
www.tirerack.com or www.tiretrends.com to name two.
