[s-cars] Pagid Squeal

I am running Pagid Orange like Joe and agree they are notorious for squeal.
But as I have noted, I don't get squeal like most users - mine only do it
when the pad is not supposed to be in contact with the rotor. This seems to
happen because the pad backing plate expands at a slower rate than the
caliper with use, allowing the pad to float sufficiently within the caliper
to oscillate against the rotor at low speed. The fix would be to find a
material that would not damage the rotor that would wedge the pad into the
caliper length wise - for example a piece of high temp. aluminum foil. But
it has to be really high temp as I have measured 600 plus degrees on the
pads after a fast run at Summit Point. anyone have any ideas?

Another thing I have tried is grinding an aggressive angle on the leading
and trailing edge of the pads which is a common fix for both pre use squeal
and the regular (Joe like) squeal. I had done this before, grinding perhaps
50 mm of only the leading edge. I have now done 2 cms of both leading and
trailing. Down side is that I have just lost 20% of my pad surface as a
result.

As for Porterfield's R4 and R4S - So far - no squeal in use, both on the
road and track, in summer and winter, much less dust and much less pre
application squeal. Its still there though. Wear is more than Pagid for
the R4 with track use and there is evidence of some pad surface break up
which is more a function of poor bedding than Porterfield performance IMO.

I like them a lot, more than the Pagid's plus they are less expensive.
However I have 2 sets of Pagid's which based on my current rate of use, will
last me the next 50 years! So I have to find a way to make them work.

The SQ pad size is extremely rare, used AFAIK only in the Audi and Ford
rally cars of the era. I don't know why Porterfield carries them in the US.
I found my Pagid's here through Keith Anderson and the Mintex set through
the UK Quattro Club.

More than you ever wanted to know - sorry.

Colin
