I put Redline in the tranny on my old Coupe quattro, and it started getting
Really Hard to shift when it was cold out. I swapped back to factory juice,
and all was better. Hope it's as simple as that for you, and not one of the
daymares you listed as possibilities <g>.

Subject: [s-cars] Need Help - Very Rough Shifting!

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]

My 95 S6 has developed a problem over the last few weeks where it has become
extremely difficult to shift when cold, and very notchy/difficult to shift
when warm. The car is a 95, with 98k miles, stock engine. Redline MT-90
changed in about 30k miles ago. I noticed, as some other listers have, that
it was harder to shift when cold. I had thought about swapping it back out
for something else, but it was fine most of the time. Now it is quite
difficult to shift nearly all the time, in all gears but 5th. Every so
often it feels normal, but very infrequently. When very cold (<40F), double
clutching is the only way to not require significant effort. However, there
are no "grinding" noises, so presumably .

I has a mechanic friend drive the car, and he could feel that it was not
shifting normally. The best suggestion he had was the slave cylinder, as a
start. He also thought he could feel a little play in the throw out
bearing, but not enough to worry about, or cause the symptoms I was
experiencing.

I've had the car since 62k miles, and though I've bled the brakes multiple
times, I did not know to bleed the clutch slave cylinder until a couple
months ago (courtesy of this list), and have not done it yet.

So I am going to bleed the brakes/slave cylinder this Saturday, but was
wondering if there was and BTDT. Any ideas what this might be? Options
I've though/stressed/paniced about:
-Bad brake fluid due to lack of bleeding slave cyl
-Slave cylinder bad
-Tranny shift linkage problem
-MT-90 needs to be changed for something else/replaced with fresh
-Clutch bad
-Tranny Bad (Yikes!)

Thanks!
-Scott (having a bad Audi gods month)
95 S6 (shifting poorly)
96 A4Q (needing thermostat - so getting TB service too)
87 4kq (needing suspension work to be ready for spring track season)
