Dan-
Synthetic oils are the way to go, definitely.
Audi uses a synthetic gear oil in your transmission already-
part no. G005000, aka G50 in the list archives.
Redline MT-90 is another good choice, lots of feedback about this
in the archives as well. I'm running this in my transmission right
now and it seems to shift better than the OEM stuff in cold weather.
Whatever you do, DO NOT use any gear oil that is rated GL-5, even
if it says it is okay for both GL-4 and GL-5. The additive package
that makes an oil okay for GL-5 makes the oil too slick for the
synchronizers in our transmissions and it is NOT SUITABLE at all.
Amsoil makes a marine application 75W90 gear oil that is only GL-4
rated, that's the one you want if you choose Amsoil. I don't know if
Royal Purple, Agip, Lubro-Moly or other companies make a GL-4 only
gear oil, you'd have to check with them.
Mobil-1 gear oil is GL-5 and no good.
As for engine crankcase oil, Redline again is another good choice.
Pram mentioned previously that Redline is one of the very few oils
that use a pure synthetic ester base- Mobil 1 ever since they went to
the "Tri-Synthetic" formulation, as well as Amsoil, Castrol, Valvoline,
to name a few, use partially dino oil while still being "synthetic"
by FTC regulations.
