[s-cars] What rotors to use with the "smaller" RS2 calipers ??

Rob!
The main difference between the 968CS caliper found on the stock RS2(304mm)
as you refer to as the "smaller" big reds ,and the bigger 993 caliper found
on the RS2 with upgraded brakes(322mm) is the pad size. The pad length is
the same, but the width is 55mm compared to 60mm, and therefore the brake
area is a lot smaller. Both calipers will fit over a 322mm rotor, but the
322 rotors I have seen all have at least 60mm contact area. The piston
diameters are also the same 44+36mm and the physical size of the 968CS
calipers is also sligthly smaller than the 993 caliper.

So the advice is to use the stock RS2 rotors with the smaller caliper(if you
already bought these) and an adapter ring to fit the different bolt-circle,
or better to buy the bigger caliper with larger pad area and brake effect,
all depending on what car to be installed on.

However both the above mentioned calipers are two-piece style with a
"complicated" pad retention system, which easily collect dirt and increase
the chance of sticking and corrosion on the caliper inside which in my head
is the single most frequent reason for unvanted noice and squeels. My
experience is that they need frequent cleaning in the pad retention area,
and a lot better design is the monoblock caliper found on the 996TT with the
pads "hanging" in three suspension points and a lot of space around them so
the dirt and dust does not collect.

My bottom line is if I am going to buy "big reds" again it is going to be
monoblock design, although they are slightly more expensive but a lot better
investment in the long run.

(And I also picked up the gearbox at Mr.Kluge last week and is extremely
satisfied with the work.He is a truly expert and nice guy)
