Thanks go to Bob Lutz for this new "optional ABS" philosophy on GM vehicles.
One time, they asked us if we could supply a cheap "empty" ABS hydraulic block, so they could delete ABS on a truck without having to change the brake lines.
You'll may even start seeing Rear-Wheel-Only ABS show back up in some GM trucks if Bob has his way...
Interesting to see the General going this way, as other OEMs are increasing the amount of "standard ABS" and even "standard YSC" on a lot of vehicle lines.
Just the other week, I returned my rental Mitsubishi Outlander because I found out during a panic stop that it didn't have ABS (I assumed all the rental cars would have it since National claimed that ABS was a feature of all vehicles in their SUV class). I went back to swap it and also found that the Mitsubishi Montero Sport they had didn't have ABS (by looking for a ABS lamp-blink on the dash when you start the car), and also their Jeep Liberty didn't have it either. Only vehicles they had with ABS were the previous generation (1994 era) Blazers, so that's what I'm "driving" now. bleh!

Guys
To clear up a slip of the keyboard, as I'm sure Scott did not do it deliberately, ABS is now a delete option on some GM cars. In fact the General does it for you, he has removed from the base specification of some of the cheaper models and it is now a $400 option. But you do get more cup holders in the base specification.
GM has never been interested in safety, unless its cost free. For years the company banged on about how it was safer to be thrown clear of the car in an accident, lied to Congress about the cost of seat belts and then discouraged their use by adopting quitre the most aweful two belt arrangement ever dreamt up. But its ok, 'cos what is good for GM is good for America.
On a more cheerful note, Auto Bilt tested a Audi 3.0 quattro, a VW Touareg, an Renault Kangoo, a Porsche C4, BMW 325i, and aToyota Corona in packed and deep snow for handling and traction the Audi A4 came out on top in all tests. Conclusion was the Audi have learnt a thing or two.
