James,

nice write-up. I would offer that it helps to have a live leg depress the
accelerator pedal slowly so that you can watch the throttle linkage rotate.
When the pedal is fully depressed, you should not be able to manually rotate
the linkage further. If the linkage stops before the pedal hits the stop,
then you have over adjusted, and risk damage to the linkage, cable, etc.
Just to clarify, however, it is not possible to have "slack" in the cable
when the pedal is fully depressed. Any slack would be taken up by the
linkage spring. Slack should be noticeable only when the pedal is not
depressed.

When the throttle linkage is closed (pedal not depressed), you should have
some slack in the cable. If you do not, then the cable is over-adjusted,
and you risk breaking the linkage, the cable, or some other unobtanium
part(s). Keep in mind that depending on how much your cable has stretched,
you may have to adjust the stop on the floor (under the pedal), to find the
right "mix", as you may run out of "grooves" on the cable adjustment barrel.
I know that on my car, I have a few "grooves" remaining on the adjustment
barrel.

Regards,

Ray
