OK folks, please correct me if I go off target here ...

There are two types of remote lock/unlock systems.  The early system
used Infra Red and the later type used a radio signal.  The main
thing to remember, is that not all of the "remotes" are IR.

The '92-'94 S4s and the (early) '95 S6s, along with the A6 & V8's
used the IR system.  The IR system is easily recognized by the
IR pickup on both R&L doorposts between the doors.  It looks like
a black plastic bump that's about 1" high.  Also, the IR keys
have the IR transmitter built into the key, looking like a light
that doesn't work.

The '95.5 S6s, and '96 & later A6s used a radio signal system.
Not having one of these cars, I'm going into speculation mode
here - I think this system uses the lock/unlock gizmo that is
separate from the key, it just hangs on your key ring.  I believe
there are several variations of these, that someone else will
have to describe.  I remember people talking about long range
and short range transmitters, and maybe some of these are also
part of the keys.

The "remotes" I've heard discussed recently for auction on eBay
are the radio signal remotes that are separate from the key.
These will not work with a '95 S6 that has the IR sensor system.

Even though Audi gets over $100 for a IR key blank, I can't imagine
that an IR key that has been cut to fit some other car would bring
very much on eBay.  If you really want a separate IR transmitter,
I have a left over IR key from my '93 V8 Quattro ...  I could cut
the key part off and take bids on the remains  :-)       The IR
transmitter should be usable as a key ring ornament!
