Good point, the problem is that there is a lot of inneficincy in running
a fan at the rpm of the motor. I actually worked for a company that was
developing a continiously variable transmission. One of our projects
was replacing the fan clutch with this trans so that you could get any
fan speed you wanted, this is ideal. The next best thing is to have the
fan speed decoupled from the motor. Audi had to design the fan so that
at idle on a hot day, in traffic it wouldn't overheat. So if you are
driving at speed and the fan comes on, like at a track, heavy load, high
speed, high rpm, the fan is pulling more air than needed. So basically
when you use an electric fan you can get away with one with much less HP
drag. I have worked on aircooled motors with up to 7-9hp or so drag on
the motor with the stock mechanical fan. The same engine can get away
with two small pancake fans. Have you ever seen a 9hp dc electric
motor? These things are fractional HP.

So where does the electricity come from? Hmmmm....
