Sounds as if this one solved itself. I've had the same experience. As
the oil gets low, the lifters are first to go. As you noted, after
topping up and running the car a time or two, they'll be filled
completely on next start up. One other thing to note, for the newer
members of the list -- a loose sparkplug (and these plugs do tend to
work themselves loose over time) sounds sounds very much like a noisy
lifter -- bit of a rattle at start up. If oil level is fine, but you
have what sounds like a noisy lifter check the torque on your plugs.
Better yet, make it a habit to check your plugs every few months.

>Ok...I guess I didn't let the car run long enough and work in to the lifter/valve area...as the noise is now gone. So I guess lifter noise hits before the "dummy" light does....
