James,
I think Paul Royal, on the 20V list, have gone this route, i.e. improved
ignition system. He has some BTDT experience although on the N/A version
of the I5-20V. From all I've read on this list and the 20V list, you
won't get any hp with ignition only but improved ignition can make
extreme modifications "sparkable" when you go over the original ignition
system capability. Would the engine resist these extreme modifications
is another story. When you think that the original ignition system can
fire modified engine with 380hp, you get an idea of what means
"extreme". It would be interesting to know if the 500hp+ I5 for sale on
mobile.de use improved ignition. I would give us a good idea of the
value this improvement.
Once again, it's not my personal opinion, not knowledgeable enough to
have an opinion on this matter. It's just a quick summary of 3 years of
post from a few Audi list.
Vincent.

S-heads...
Back in December there was a small thread from Bruce M. about "Hi-Energy
Ignition Systems", interested I contacted www.ignitionsolutions.com to
see if they had anything for the AAN engine since they had nothing
posted on their web site. The rep said that 1 of the Engineers
previously modified a set coilovers for an UrS4 friend in Germany, but
it was a 1 time deal, and need confirmation from the Engineer who
performed the surgery. I recently heard back from the Ignition Solutions
and said they could do it again, priced at $875 for 5 new coils with
warranty, or they could modify your own coils (I don't know the price)
but I would imagine around $275 since 5 new coils costs around $600.
