Jack;

I goes without saying that the car is, umm, dangerous to drive in this
condition.

The best fix is to remove the cracked reinforcement plate by drilling out
the spot welds, have a metal shop fab up a new plate from heavier gauge
metal using the old plate as a pattern, and weld it in place. Ron Einblau
had this done on his car - I think it cost him around $300. It looks stock
and should hold up better than the OEM part.

Subject: [s-cars] Cracked steering rack mount

Hello Everyone,

Well I think I managed to crack the steering rack mount last weekend after a
spirited drive over the freshly paved 2 mile up and 2 mile down twisty,
rolley-polley, 16 foot wide, several hairpin turn, 17% grade drive up and
over HURRICANE MOUNTAIN ROAD. Great fun! I even managed to get my 13 inch
big reds hot enough to stink a little on the way down.

The rack us making a creaking noise when I turn in my drive and I can see
the rack move about 1/8 inch at the extremes. I jacked the front end up and
can see a crack on the right hand side of the lower rack mount bolt. WHat
is the best way to fix this problem. I remember seeing a few posts a while
ago that said welding the crack is not good enough. Any help out there?

Thanks

Jack
