Hi Lee, Ray and Steve:

I have pasted instructions from a previous email I sent to the list in
April.

I'm not sure if there are any differences between US and Canada, but I
would assume them are the same. I did my testing on a *borrowed* remote
from my local dealer who was kind enough to lend me a new remote for
testing purposes. Once I confirmed it worked, then I purchased it.

I have successfully programmed the keyless entry to work with the newer
style switchblade keys. I found correct coding instructions at
http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/Body/remotecoding.html The
instructions are for an A8 but it works fine on my 97 spec and I think
it will work on any 1996 to 1997 spec with the RF remote lock system.

I found that I had to erase all codes first because I think the control
module was already programmed by someone else (previous owner lost the
remotes). Actually, I figure its preferable to erase the remotes first,
that way you know exactly how many times to press the unlock button.
Also, the instructions say that horn will sound after pressing the open
button, but mine did not.

The switchblade key comes in 2 parts, the remote and the key. The p/n
for the remote is 4D0 837 231 E 01C. Its a 3 button remote (4 if you
include the red panic button) that also unlocks the truck, this is a
nice feature as the remotes supplied with my car only had 2 buttons and
did not have the trunk unlock feature. The key must be cut by the dealer
or VW/Audi Canada (USA) which is based on the VIN. I elected for the
latter because VW Canada has a better quality cutting machine which
makes a cleaner cut, but it takes 3 days (OK call me anal). The price
for the remote is $84 CAD list. I don't have the p/n or price for the
key handy but it should be too much. (inserted Jul 3, the p/n for the
key is 4D0 837 246 B INB) The remotes are frequently available on ebay,
search under "audi switchblade".

Sean:

I am in the same boat at John - and have the RF remote. Did your
original remote have 2 buttons - a lock and an unlock - button or were
the originals another style?

The original on my car - a 11/95 build date 95.5 S6 sedan - was the 2
button style and I've been told that this is not compatible with the new
switchblade type keys. If you have a different story I would love to
know how you did it. Please.

John:

Is your alarm system IR (infra-red) or RF (radio frequency)? Mine is RF.

I have a set of 2 RF remotes that I no longer use as I "upgraded" to the
newer switchblade style remote keys. I'm surprised Audi says they are
NLA as mine were supplied new with the vehicle when I bought it in March
2003.

I would try calling another Audi dealer or if you still cannot find
some, I would be willing to sell you mine. Or you could try the
switchblade style.
