[s-cars] Bike rack recommendations?

This is one of those times when you wish you had an avant :)

Coupla choices...

trunk mount
pros - cheap, easy to install
cons - can scratch the trunk, damage the taillights, scrape the bikes on the
road, fall off, three bikes would be a *lot* for a trunk mount

(I'm not a big fan of trunk mounts)

receiver hitch mount
pros - easy, relatively stable
cons - expensive, you need a hitch, cars behind you can slam into your bikes

roof mount
pros - pretty stable, bikes are out of the way
cons - somewhat expensive, more difficult to mount, put bikes up, low
overhangs (garages) can cause alignment problems with the bike

I *only* run roof mounted racks...bought a hitch mount for my Range Rover,
didn't think it was sturdy enough...bikes moved around too much.

Then again, I'm putting multiple $4-5K bikes on my rack, so I'm pretty
fanatical :)

Two brands to consider, both have adapters for Audis. Yakima and Thule. I
had been a Thule fan for many years, recently switched to Yakima as Thule
had some problems with their fork mounts.

You will have no problem fitting 3 or 4 bikes on an Audi roof (48" rack
bars)

Go to yakima.com and you'll find what you need and links to online
resellers. No bargains on ebay...the stuff goes for 80% of retail there.

The good news is that if you need to move your rack to another car, you can
get a new adapter and retain everything else...
