Because the W8 Passat has the same Lucas/Girling HP-2 brakes
as the S4tt and A6 2.7t and 4.2, the wheels need to have a lot
of caliper clearance, maybe the reason for the "look" you mention.

W8s are not very impressive in straight-line speed- nice and
torquey in the midrange, but I was able to completely smoke one
at highway speeds- 80 to 100 type acceleration runs. Maybe with
a stickshift it would be okay, but that is a nightmare of complexity
in the valvetrain actuation and the like.
