[s-cars] Big Reds Softer After Tracking Car?

The Porterfield R4S pads cannot handle track temps, particulary on the front of a 2-ton car without brake cooling ducts. They are designed for street/autocross use. Try the R4 compound or, better yet, the Carbotech Panther XP, which is a "streetable" track pad that is easy on rotors.

Well on Saturday AM I flushed my brakes to make sure that I had no air in t=
he lines...looked pretty clean..as the ATE Super-Blue came out w/o any air.=
Brakes felt a bit better but still I am concerned..as I am unable to lock=
the wheels with the ABS off. I mean it is not like the car doesn't stop..=
.just I seem to remember the pedal being firmer and car stopped faster befo=
re tracking her.
I did the BOMB test to see if perhaps it was toast per SJM Auto. but the pe=
dal did not get stiff until about 35 pumps so seems ok.
Now a few have suggested that my 2 Week old Porterfield R4-S pads are now t=
oast...so I guess that is the next thing to check. One thing I did see tha=
t was interesting is that on the Rear wheels I saw evidence of the Rear Min=
tex Red Pads (metallic) actually turning the metal in the pads to liquid..a=
s I saw very small metal splats on the inside of the wheels.
I could try putting the Mintex Red box back on the front but since they are=
a non-transfer pad would probably need to get the rotors turned. Guess I =
could replace the rear Mintex w/ Porterfields but that is sort PITA.
It is just interesting that I can press the pedal (with some force) down to=
the stopper w/o locking up the brakes. Is this normal? I would assume not=
.=2E.
I will see if I have time tonight (since I watch the TDF this AM ;-)) to ex=
amine the R4-S pads to see if there is any Pink/Red/White/Glazing/Cracking/=
Separation of the pads.
Any additional thoughts/advice on this topic would be appreciated...
Cheers

Gents,
So for the 1st time on Wednesday night I tracked my car. In the last week=
I changed my pads from the Mintex Reds to Porterfield R4-S. Well during t=
he track time I would see the brake light come on and eventually go off aft=
er the brakes cooled a bit. The brakes felt better and better as I went on=
during the day.
However now driving my car they feel "softer" meaning takes more pressure t=
o stop the car then before. They dont feel weak but softer. (ECS Stage II)
Brake Accumulator (The Bomb)?
Normal? Something Not right?
Here is me Apex'ing early:

In general, yes. There are some parts that you really can use stainless
on if you want. As an example, the nuts that hold the ball joint to the
control arm. I used stainless locknuts there and I'm totally confident
in them. In this case if I had used a stainless bolt that had the
appropriate shoulder the incident on the highway would have never
happened.
I use plenty of stock hardware on my car where it is obvious: the brake
caliper retaining bolts, the subframe bolts, stuff that is obviously
under lots of load.

GL-5 is bad for syncro's in most cars. I have talked to a few oil guy's and=
they told me that often people will put GL-5 into there cars thinking it i=
s an improvement. It doesn't provide to right properties, too slippery for=
the syncro's, this will lead to premature ware and most likely issues with=
cold/warm weather shifting. Especially in the heavily loaded gears like 1=
st and 2nd.
I used to repair old vw/porsche transmissions and had many syncro's to repl=
ace when GL-5 type oils came out.

Anyone knows if the the Audi G50 for our tranny is a GL-5 or a GL-4? My mec=
h filled the tranny and the diff with 75W90 GL-5. It should be OK for the d=
iff as the Redline recommended oil for the diff is also a 75W90 GL-5. But I=
'm scared for the tranny as the GL-5 was said to make the synchro slip on t=
he 90Q20V which could lead to serious damage to the gear. Is it the same wi=
th the 01E? Should I change it asap? The gear are still shifting OK, at lea=
st as well as with the 125Kmiles old oil but I would have expected smoother=
shifting with the new oil.
BTW, have anyone tried the Amsoil 75W90 GL-4 MIL-L 2105 in the tranny? This=
oil is readily available when I have to wait may be a week for Redline MTL.

woops, I read that too fast. I see what you mean. Not sure that would
really help any as far as preventing it from popping out (that's what
the bolt is supposed to be for).

you're right, they are. As are lots of other suspension nuts like the
ball joint retaining nuts that hold the ball joint to the control arm.

a few years back my car was in my garage and a shelf support broke,
dumping a bunch of hardware onto the side of the car:

I got an insurance check but never fixed the dents. Might as well get
to that now!

Is your wastegate diaphragm good?
BetBuild at aol.com wrote:--

Guys,
I have this problem where boost will spike up to 30psi sometimes. Mostly,
though, it goes up to 25 or so and then it stumbles. If I stay at half throttle
and only push 15psi, it is very smooth, so I've rules out ignition issues.
Any ideas? Car is full RS2, by the way. Could I have installed the
wastegate wrong? All hoses to and from the wgfv look to be okay.

Marc,
You really did luck out, painfull as it was (only to wallet and pride).
BTW, this can happen even when using the proper bolt and nut combo.
If you don't wiggle that ball joint up and down while tightening things up,
you can tighten it above or below the narrowed area of the ball joint,
though it won't be ovious until you wonder why your newly redone suspension
is making more noise than before (clunk). It will appear that things are
right when they're not (BTDT -- though not with your experience). Another
reason to always double check suspension repairs and use the proper mounting
hardware..
