I had exactly the same problem and did the same thing. Except it was
raining ! ! ! !

Thanks Bill - very useful info.
When I had problems with my sunroof, I also couldn't get the manual
crank to turn, so I unbolted the motor from the winding gear. Of
course, this took the tension off the motor, so the manual crank then
worked.
Actually, with the motor physically disconnected from the rest of the
mechanism, it was easy to close the sunroof manually. Then (without
reconnecting the motor), I used the switch to get the motor into the
home position. Then I bolted the motor back on and everything was fine.
