We tow a utility trailer behind our S6 Avant - no problem. We bought
an aluminum trailer: weighs 325 pounds and is rated to 2000 pounds
gross. Don't do anything stupid with it and your clutch will last
and your engine won't overheat. That said, I once creamed a new
Mustang Cobra on roll-on while towing this trailer empty. Sure
surprised the driver!

I towed dirt bikes, lumber, etc. on it all the time. I don't
tow with it anymore because our ML500 simply tows loads much better,
especially when it comes to backing up.
