no, you don't have to lose much coolant.  you can buy clamps from the
auto parts store to pinch off the hoses, or just use a couple of vise-grips
(but don't reef on them!).

the repair is a piece of cake.  be careful not to overtighten the hose
clamps when you secure the hoses to the new auxiliary water pump, because
the nipples are plastic and may crack.
