Jim,

The climate control is vacuum powered. Check for a vacuum leak under the
hood. There is a (green?) vac line that runs around the cowl to a tank
under the battery; check this for battery acid damage. Near the brake
booster there should be a tee, and a black line that goes into the firewall.
Nearby there should be a check valve (blue/black); check this too. You can
always pull the radio to make sure you have vacuum to the control, but your
issue is most likely under the hood. If you need a new control, let me know
and I can probably find you one in my treasure trove.

Subject: [s-cars] NAC - question re: Golf 2 HVAC....

Hey guys,

Sorry for the off-topic, but I figure some of you had to have had a 2nd
generation Golf or Jetta or GTI and the VWVortex board is of no help - Here
is the issue: There are two sliders that control the whole HVAC system and a
dial. The fan speed dial and the temperature slider work fine, however the
slider that controls where the air comes out (dash, feet, defrost etc) isn't
making anything change - the air aways comes out of the the defrost vents.

Anybody BTDT?

Thanks and sorry for the major Off-Topic.,
