Listers,
A while back, I reported stalling problems with a stage 1 MTM upgrade
purchased through Anderson Motorsports in Minneapolis. After being
flatbedded to a mechanic (on Anderson's recommendation) the problem was
traced back to the ECU. I was given a stock ECU to get the car back on the
road while Anderson attempted to find the problem.
We thought that we had it at one point when Anderson's board technician
thought he spotted a loose connection and fixed it. No dice. The car died
when the "fixed" ECU was installed and wrapped on the cover with a
screwdriver handle. In frustration, Keith Anderson purchased a rebuilt ECU
from Audi, had sockets put in for the EPROM's, and upgraded the new ECU with
the MTM chips.
Saturday, we installed the new, upgraded ECU. The car did not want to
start. When it did, the check engine light started flashing a code. When
the ECU was tapped on the top, the car died. OK, what were the chances of
two ECU's both being bad? Not much. We started swapping the EPROM's,
one-by-one. One of the EPROM's was bad. Keith said he had never seen, or
heard, of a bad EPROM before. He will get a replacement EPROM, but not
until after he goes racing later this week. After having recently done the
track event at BIR, I can't begrudge him that.
