Nathan,
Sounds very similar to the symptoms when one of my coil packs got fried.
The wiring can be very old and brittle because of all the heat and it has a
tendency to develop shorts. The problem is that in Audi's infinite wisdom
it is virtually impossible to replace the wiring without replacing the coil
packs as there are no connectors, just straight wires into the coils.

Subject: [s-cars] Help! Car is missin' bad with no power
Car is missing badly. The boost is up (according to '92 digital boost
gauge), but no power. I can barely make it up a steep hill and I smell gas
coming out off the exhaust. Car shudders and runs like an older diesel
truck.
I re-torqued the spark plugs and it ran well for about 30 minutes. I shut
it down for 15 minutes, started it up and it started missing again
immediately.
PSO (Power Stage Output)? I've changed one once before or a bad hose? HELP!
