RE: [s-cars] getting her back togetherThat's the only way I know how.
I don't buy that ring-gap method for cylinder-to-wall clearance a-toll, alt=
hough it is important to check end gaps.
The motor's apart, do the job - individuals can build better motors than fa=
ctories.
Sorry about misspelling "query", that got by me.

Elijah:
Phil is describing the "right way" to do it, and it is hard to argue agai=
nst putting an engine back together the right way, BUT, if you using standa=
rd rings and just measure the end gap in three locations in the cylinder, i=
f the end gap is ok, I think it is safe to assume the bore is within spec.=
.=2E..but still leaves the risk that a piston is no longer round or within =
its original spec. If you are just reringing "because the head is off" (i.e=
. without a known piston/bore problem) I think you are safe using this meth=
od.

Hey Elija,
I've read the responses to your querry, and I'm surprised to find the lack
of interest on the part of the group about piston-to-wall clearances. You
really, really should measure all the pistons with a micrometer, arrange
them by size, and measure all the bores with a bore gauge at the top,
middle, and bottom of the cylinder. Best way I've found to measure the
bores is to 'zero' the bore gauge sized on the biggest piston, then measu=
re
the clearances directly. That way you can verify the clearances are with=
in
spec (hopefully) and get the pistons into the most appropriate holes.
