Subject: [s-cars] What springs would lower our cars the most?

Dan pondered:
I was looking at the H&R's for our cars but they only drop the car like 1.3
inches and that's not enough for those huge gaps between the wheels and
fenders. The 200 20 valve H&R springs lower that car about 1.5 inches so
since our cars are heavier I was thinking that if I use those it might lower
the
car even more. Another alternative I was thinking about is Intrax springs
for the regular Audi 100 Quattro (C4) which are supposed to lower that car
1.75 inches, would it lower our cars that much too or are the S4's already
a bit lower than the 100's? It's hard to tell since they both have huge gaps
between the wheels and fenders. Are there any other alternatives? Any
other springs/combinations? I want to go as low as possible, trying to
eliminate as much of the gaps as I can.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Dan
I am replying:
About 1 month ago I lowered my stock 95.5 S6 sedan with 86K miles.
This was before all the talk about the correct Eibach springs. It would not
have mattered anyhow since I had a bad experience with Eibachs on an UrQ.
For whatever reasons I went with H&R 29921 springs. As my intended use
for the S6 was as a daily driver and my shocks felt fine I did not bother to
change springs - it has Boges. Here's my data, floor to fender lip at the
midpoint of the wheel and I'm running the factory 7.5 by 16 wheels with
rather common and boring HR-rated tires. Measurements in inches and
in this order LF, RF, LR and RR. Before: 27&1/4, 27&1/4, 27&5/8, 27&3/8.
After installation plus 500 miles: 25&1/2, 25&1/2, 26&1/8, 26 even.
You can see that the drop was about 1.75 inches in the front and
1.5 inches in the rear. Car looks great! If you want me to email you
a side shot of the car let me know and I'll charge up the camera.
BTW, I would not want to go any lower. There are skid brackets protecting
your cats. They are just behind your front wheels. I probably only have
3 to 4 inches of clearance remaining - may actually be less.
Installation notes: A lot is written on the procedures for suspension
changes.
FWIW, I choose to drop my front suspension. Made the job easier but be
aware that you will be buying more one-time only use hardware. I spent about
$150 for hardware and dust boots. S&K makes a real nice ½ inch drive
17mm hex socket - you'll need that for the drive shaft to wheel bearing bolt
- one per side.
They have a web-site and you can order online. I have yet to do the
alignment
but may not. On my car the camber plates were set in the middle.
I just cranked them full to the outside and the car drove perfectly straight
and
without any wander. Via eyeballing, the toe looks fine but I'm probably
running
a bit too much negative camber. Don't really like these tires anyhow.
Since
you're under the car playing with the front sway bar , it's a good time to do
an oil change. Overall everything went quite smooth.
Good luck,
Mark
