Sounds like the same problem I had. Try your test with the engine off,
and turn the steering wheel back and forth. Do you hear or feel a click
or noise as if something is loose? My mechanic (dealer) diagnosed this
as a bad steering rack and replaced it under warranty. No problems
since.

Subject: [s-cars] front left "bad" noise developed.
i have one for all of you,
w/ wheels pointed straight ahead at a standstill and breaks not applied,
i turn the steering wheel to the right 1/2 a turn, pause, then turn back
to left and hear a "click" or soft "pop" sound from the front left wheel
assembly. does not happen when the inverse is tried. any thoughts?
tie-rod position (i.e. level to ground)? upper shock mount cracked?
lower control arm bushings? steering rack mount? i have inspected all
these w/ car on ground and does not appear to be any visible failures of
them.
other notes:
1. have developed a somewhat harsh "clunk" at same front left wheel
assembly when driving over rough spots. the DC roads do not help this
any, but on compression, there is a stiff, "thunk". i cannot tell if
it does it on a fast, larger rebound as well due to road noise. i
state this last as i thought maybe the above described test would
eliminate some possibilities.
2. am riding on h&r/bilstein sport setup w/ stock avus 16" rims.
as allllllllllllllllways, all comments are highly appreciated.
sincerely,
matt ludwig.
