Ed,
I'm not sure about the various sounds you're experiencing... but I can tell
you that pressure testing will tell you absolutely nothing about the bypass
valve or if it is functioning correctly.  The bypass circuit is completely closed
loop.  If the valve had failed completely, pressure within the system would
still stabilize at your regulated level.
