My guess on the radio light:

When I worked for VW, the first coded radios all used to to be programmed f=
or a code of 1111 or 0000.  Later they went to a specific code for each box=
; the "call the dealer" system we know and love today.  Not all radios came=
 from the factory with the specific code pre-programmed, some had a code as=
signed, but not "burned in".  Part of the new car prep was to code the radi=
o=2E  Sometimes the techs "forgot" to do this.  I would image that your rad=
io was uncoded until you inserted the code, and now it will require the cod=
e for future disconnects.

I just got my radio LED to start flashing a couple of days ago.  All I did
was input the security code (as urs4.com instructs)
