Hello all:

Couple of little jobs done today. Even though they are on my son's A6
Avant, as a 98 it is the same body style.
First, the driver's side mirror had a serious delamination. When he
told me he could see just fine, only had to tilt the mirror and use the
top half, I figured it was time to act. A quick call to my best friend
the dealer, who had the mirror for $43. I didn't know they had anything
under a hundred. The Audi CD bible recommended a couple of stiff
plastic wedges and a careful pop, so I used a bent screwdriver
(couldn't get the chainsaw to start). The mirror popped right off, but
so did the surrounding ring that moves with the motors to adjust the
mirror. The ring easily snaps off the mirror, once you can see the
snaps, that is, while you are holding it in your hand. Off with the two
wire snaps for the heat. Gently pry the ring back into position after
unsnapping the two small ball joint gear drives from the ring. There is
a small white rocker that pops into the ring, with gentle prying
(couldn't find my crowbar). Snap on the wires, push the mirror into
place and BAM, you're done. Good thing, because in this 97 degree heat,
sweat runs faster than the car.

Next job was the bulb replacements in the dash. Went like a breeze
after reviewing the website instructions, particularly the part about
the rag on the steering wheel to prevent scratches.

And by the way, in case HUW (wait, I mean You) want to by our S6, it
is now for sale with 87000 miles, running great, bone stock, new full
tune up and timing belt and 12 month 12000 mile transferrable warranty.
Bring up some cash. $16000 will take it, maybe less if you make a good
impression. Perhaps I can bring it to the get together, if It is not
gone by then.

Thanks for all the help over the many months.
Rich Molk
