Here's what I needed when I recently found myself in your shoes:
(1) X-plug and o-ring, Audi part number 026 145 541, $6.53 from Barry at
ClairParts, 800/354-5100.
(1) liter Pentosin CHF 11S, I had to resort to the local Foreign Autopart,
don't ask how much I paid 8-P.
(1) 11/16" drag link socket for 3/8" drive, NAPA part number NB-95, $6.79,
local NAPA store (www.napaonline.com to find it) had to order it, had it
next day. Best to quote their part number to them, so they order the right
part.
1. I had to file the corners of the drag link socket to get a tight fit in
the X-plug slot.
2. I had to loosen the plumbing to get at the X-plug, which required removal
the banjo fitting on the top of the pump and removal of a small bolt toward
the back of the pump. One's a 13mm, one's a 14mm.
3. I had to use an impact driver driving the drag link socket to free the
X-plug, then finish removal using the drag link socket on a socket wrench
extension. Be careful as you remove the X-plug, as it is holding captive a
piston and spring, both of which have a strong affinity for deep, dark,
unreachable recesses in your engine bay.
4. Liberally goo up the o-ring on the new X-plug with Pentosin, so it
doesn't catch and tear going in.
5. Install the X-plug. How tight? I got various answers, ranging from "tight
enough to not leak" to "37 ft-lbs". Unfortunately, the 37 ft-lbs answer came
after I had used the "tight enough" method, and already driven a fair
amount. It doesn't leak, so I suspect either will work, since the o-ring is
doing the sealing, not the torque.
6. Make sure the _little_ screen in the end of the banjo bolt is clean, and
reinstall. Rumor has it that Tim at Northern European reinstalls this,
re-using the existing banjo washers, so that was good enough for me.
7. Fill the power steering reservoir with Green Gold, aka Pentosin.
8. Check for leaks, drive happily upon discovery of none!
9. Spread kitty-litter on garage floor to clean up all that leaked Pentosin
from before your repair!
Total time for this is about 1/2 hour, max, not including getting the parts.
Break a leg <g>, YMMV.

THis is the 2nd steering pump I have that has started
a leak. It is leaking from the X bolt. Can I tighten
this and with what tool or do I have to replace the
pump. Please feel free to reply to me directly.
