[s-cars] Driveshaft CB

I plan to tackle my issue this weekend (exact same as yours) by doing
the following:
1. Replace front driveshaft CV joint and boot.
2. Replace center carrier bearing.
3. Repack joint / replace boot on rear CV.
4. Replace trans mounts.
I have never heard the suggestion that the Torsen diff is bad. Anyone
out there had this happen? What are the symptoms? I think the clink
noise is much too hollow and resonating to be internal. I have a lot of
play in the center bearing, but that may not be the real source.
According to the Bentley, a misaligned driveshaft is a cause of
vibration and before replacement of a "bad" driveshaft it should be
re-aligned first. I'm replacing the key pieces of the driveshaft anyway
because I don't want to take the car apart twice!

I also have a shudder at hard acceleration which I think is related to a
loud squeal that I initially thought was the CS bearing. Car was in the
shop last week and my mechanic thinks it's the torsion differential. I
had it on the hoist last week and there seemed to be quite a bit of play
in the driveshaft. Additionally, we noticed that if I pop the clutch a
little (a very little) at take off, there seems to be a little "clink"
noise. (not like the colonel) After having taken the car to 3 shops now,
(all who supposedly specialize in S4's) no one seems to want to tackle
the problem.
Any suggestions.

Don't have the answer, but maybe the vibration is being caused by dried
out grease in the front driveshaft CV. That is a fairly common problem
at the 80 to 100k mile mark. Mechanics regreased mine and end of
problem. Exhaust has to be dropped.

I am diagnosing my driveline vibration/shudder on acceleration. I have
finally got around to getting my car up on lift. How much play should I
see in that center carrier bearing (CB) if I try and move the driveshaft
around with my hand? Should that bearing move around much at all?
Thanks -AP
