[s-cars] Terrible clunk/pop coming from the front end

My 95 S6 has developed a very loud pop/clunk noise from the front end.  Hap=
pens over bumps and when when turning.  Seems most reproducible when turnin=
g=2E  Appears to come from both sides.  Does not occur when wheel is turned=
 while not moving, but just after rolling forward.  Also occurs when changi=
ng from moving backward to moving forward.  It can sometimes be felt throug=
h the steering wheels or the shifter, but not always.

Other relevant data:
- struts (bilstein HDs), mounts and bearings new in Oct 02
- good local shop replaced subframe and control arm bushings in an effort t=
o fix ($1k later, no difference, :\ )

Any ideas as to the cause?  CV joints (both sides at the same time)?  Trans=
mission (with my luck)??
