Hi,
I am running a RS2 turbo with a free-flow exhaust and have not replaced
or done any hardware tweaks to the stock MAF. I have re-profiled the
boost and fuel/advance maps but have always assumed that the airflow
sensor could handle it.

Careful here. You sound like you have hit the infamous MAF cut
that occurs when you exceed the maximum amount of flow allowed by your
MAF/software/resistor tweaking. The only way around this is to go with a
different MAF or SW or both.
