Douglas,
On a 94 S4...
There are 2 diagnostic connections under the hood in with the relays
(driver's side). a black terminal and a white one. With the car
running, short these two connections for 4 seconds and then the engine
light on the dash display will blink out the code. Good information is

This is all OBD1 information - you may have an OBD2 connector (albiet
with OBD1 guts), very similar, but list wisdom will guide you towards
what the conections to short out are.
